The national membership fee helps cover the cost of essential services, including Scout program reviews and updates, liability insurance for those participating in approved Scouting activities, criminal background checks, youth protection, and the development of intellectual property for national, council, and unit programs.

The Boy Scouts of America has worked to keep the membership fee as low as possible. To ensure we have the resources to fulfill the promise of Scouting, a $5/member increase has been approved by the national executive board. However, the $25 new member fee has been eliminated.

The following national membership fee structure will take effect May 1, 2024 (note: this is a change from the original date of April 1).  The local surcharge for insurance will remain the same,
