Open Letter to Unit Leadership
(October 2021) Shooting Sports Training Opportunities
I am often asked by Scouters, at a range event, what ways a unit can help the Rangemaster team host and support the Shooting Sport programs at Cherokee Scout Reservation. Planning the date early always comes to mind, quickly followed by finding the credentialed volunteers from our team. These two parameters operate hand-n-hand. Most of our Rangemasters are unit leaders just like you. Some of their calendars are planned a year out while others operate on “this month” short stroke. I think you get the point.
Now, what if your unit had just ONE adult interested in Shooting Sports. Even better if that candidate is looking for a position fit that doesn’t consist of every week preparation. On top of that, they don’t even need to be “that gun gal/guy” dressed in tactical pants, but instead possess a belief in promoting a safe youth firearm program with camp target shooting.
Here’s the simple math. The one person would be 50% of the required Shooting leadership on the Archery or Rifle Range for your unit event. The person could be your “In-House” merit badge counselor for these shooting disciplines to help your Scouts with advancement. Depending on how often your unit likes to camp and shoot at Cherokee, they are working the range one week-end a year for your unit. To finish the math equation, the other 50% comes from the pool of credentialed volunteers, which is established but always needs to be replenished due to natural attrition. Your select ONE can be part of the pool and help one other unit a year. Helping one other unit a year is part of the Rangemaster expected commitment. Total outlay – two Saturdays a year. Then there is the FUN part for this ONE adult, when they join us each Christmas as the Rangemasters take to the Sporting Clays course and personally shoot together in a relaxed festive social event.
Sound like someONE in your unit? There is a newly published link on the council website titled “Rifling to Rangemaster”. Sure a cheese laden reference to the lands and grooves of a rifle barrel, but your ONE person will quickly find that our Rangemaster volunteer team is just as much fun, as it is serious about safe Shooting Sport programs for our youth. When the ONE brings us their positive Attitude, we can provide the Knowledge and Skills to execute our structured youth shooting programs.

I sincerely appreciate your time and will be happy to answer any questions. Hope to see you and your unit back out on the range at Cherokee Scout Reservation.
